Calcania GSM | Clare Valley, Australia

£20.20

A Grenache/Shiraz/Mourvedre blend with a silky and refined style.

2017 Clare vintage was one of the latest in a decade to kick off due to the rainfall during the early growing season. The very wet winter and spring was followed followed a sunny spell which allowed the vines to dry out in the summer. This long, dry ripening period allowed the fruit to intensify colour while retaining the more savoury, elegant tannins Clare is known for.

Nestled in the Clare Valley’s Stanley Flat region, Calcannia is 130km due north of Adelaide, and 6 km north of the
township of Clare, beside the Hutt River and the Clare Valley Racecourse. It’s moderate-continental climate
enjoys cool nights and long warm summer days, helping give balance and structure to the wines.

Calcannia was rated a 5 Star winery by James Halliday, 2019

Awards:

Gold – Mundus Vini Spring Tasting 2019

16.5 pts – Jancis Robinson 2019

95 pts – Wine Showcase 2019

Vintage: 2017

ABV 15%

Grape Varieties: Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre

Tasting notes: Chocolate and ripe raspberries have a hint of meatiness on the nose. These aspects blend harmoniously together with a flavour profile of dark berries, bitter chocolate and cured meats. Its rounded character makes it easier drinking than the abv would suggest. Drink 2020-2025.

Pairing suggestions: Antipasti, pork, ripe cheese, ostrich and kangaroo
